  16. <p>Ballot burning robs a student of her title but brings down a
  17. principal

  19. <p>    Unmarried and five months pregnant, sporting a punk look of
  20. dyed red hair, metal bracelets and black fingernails, April
  21. Schuldt did not fit the conventional image of a high school
  22. homecoming queen. Nonetheless, she won the student election at
  23. Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and thus seemed
  24. to have every right to the title. But school officials didn't
  25. see it that way; they denied the 17-year-old her crown and named
  26. the runner-up, pert and clean-cut Elizabeth Weld, as winner. Last
  27. week Eau Claire District superintendent Lee Hansen exposed a
  28. plot by principal Charles Zielin and three assistant principals
  29. to burn the original ballots and cover up their scam. Hansen
  30. announced disciplinary actions against the four administrators
  31. and a teacher who came forward. "In trying to protect the
  32. traditional image of Memorial High School," said Hansen, "these
  33. individuals trampled over . . . the democratic process."

  35. <p>     Schuldt approached school authorities after a student
  36. tipped her off that she had won. Hansen's subsequent
  37. investigation ultimately determined that she had received 100
  38. votes, against fewer than 70 cast for runner-up Weld. As a
  39. result, principal Zielin resigned. One assistant principal was
  40. placed on unpaid leave, and two others received letters of
  41. reprimand. A teacher who counted the ballots was suspended
  42. without pay for 10 days and removed as a department chair and
  43. adviser. With homecoming come and gone, Schuldt never got to
  44. wear her crown. But she has been invited to appear on eight
  45. television programs and is talking to the Donahue show.
